Fast or Slow? That is the Question

I continued to wish I had lost the weight faster.... Faster like this girl... faster like that person... Always wanting to beat someone else at least one person. Always wanting to beat myself. Accomplish the goals I set forth in a certain amount of time. To prove that "I CAN DO IT". That "I CAN BE SOMEONE SPECIAL". I believe we all expect more from ourselves. Even if we don't compare ourselves to anyone else we still, at least at some point in this journey, have wanted more.

I recently got discouraged because I had expected it would only take 1 year to get to where I wanted. Then I could maintain. Well that year is 5 weeks away and I'm not quite 1/2way there. After struggling with it I am okay with it.

Today, I had a ah-ha moment. We all have the chance of gaining weight back if we are not conscience about it. We can see so many people lose all this weight (many times quickly) just to turn around again and gain it back. We see it with Biggest Loser contestants. Through that show and our own personal journey we have learned that we have our own personal strengths and weaknesses we must use to grow and to over come.

I thought today... while talking with Danny... how frustrated I was that I DID fall off the "band-wagon" several times. I was sad that I couldn't have just stayed on the whole time and been done sooner. As she always says, (as I usually figured just to cheer me up but now see the full truth) "I would rather you lose the weight slower and keep it off than faster and gain it back." I don't know if it was just the mood I'm in but it struck me different.....
I could have lost the weight fast and not figured myself out, gain the weight back and had to do it over again until I learned (which I KNOW NONE of US want to HAVE to do it again) :o) OR I could do it slower and learn as I go, thus preventing me from HAVING to lose weight all over again
I don't know about you but it's been hard enough. I don't want to have to do this again! LOL I want to travel the stormy seas to where my happy little island is and enjoy every minute I am there!!! Perhaps, and most likely, I will venture the steep hills while I'm there so that I get a better view of where I am, as well as where I came from but all the while staying happy healthy and content. (i.e. I will get to my best fit body and maintain. And as many do I will try for the ULTIMATE figure for special events but never leaving that healthy fit staple.)

I am NOW content to have fallen off the band-wagon a few times. I am a little grateful too. The knowledge and experiences I have gained are priceless. I am glad I have not lost faster so that I could learn. I am a happy mother, wife, school volunteer, active in church, learning to work with & not just deal with a back injury AND still performing (most, haha, the house could be vacuumed) of my responsibilities & duties; All the while losing weight and becoming a better me for the rest of my life. There really is NO EXCUSES.
IT CAN BE DONE. YOU (yes you! whoever is reading this) CAN MAKE THE CHANGES YOU WANT. Jus NEVER GIVE UP but ALWAYS HAVE FUN!

sometimes it takes some time and several people telling you that you have to figure this out, it is you that has the final decision, and it is you that has to either beat yourself up or encourage yourself. it has all come down to what is working for each of us
  • By Ben D on May 27, 2011 9:21am

Like some brilliant person before said - We all have to learn to live within our own skins, and you just described how one learns how to do just that. Keep up the good work, and don't be too hard on yourself :-)

LIGHT BULB ON! This is what I was trying to explain with my long reply when you were feeling discouraged a few weeks ago. I think your trainer was getting at the same thing. I'm glad it all clicked for you. It took decades to put the weight on, don't worry if it takes two years, or three, or whatever to get to your ultimate goal. You will learn how to be healthy and happy along the way. So so so happy for you. This is a moment to celebrate. Push ups for everyone! Go until you can't do any more (or 3 minutes for Karl, he'd be here all day).

So glad you've figured some of this stuff out for yourself!! It's an awesome feeling to know you are in control of yourself and your destiny!! You keep going and you WILL make your goals!!!
  • By Erin Keith on May 25, 2011 3:57pm

I'm so proud of you!!!! You will do this; fast or slow or somewhere in between. You are doing it at your own pace and that is what is going to work for you!
    Hugs, Clarity & Strength...Erin

it's at that point that we change our lives for the better. I've tried for years doing it fast and adding it back on. Now it's slow n steady. So pround of you for finding that moment. We can't force anyone to be better. They need to get to that realization on their own. You GO GIRLY! :)
  • By Zayda on May 25, 2011 1:03pm

I can totally relate to you in soooo many levels. Keep your head up and all though you may not see the changes fast enough, but in time you will look back and see how far you have come! Keep on doing what you've been doing and you will be there in no time! =)
  • By thall24 on May 25, 2011 1:03pm

Slow and steady....do it the right way. No magic pills or potions or powders will every take the place of hard work which you are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • By Karen Van Dehy on May 25, 2011 1:03pm

well said Rachel Little! Life is about the journey and you don't get any do-over's. So if you always do your best (which may not always be as good as someone else's) with love and kindness and a happy heart then you have done your best! And that's all you can do!
  • By Charles W. on May 25, 2011 12:59pm

I like your positive attitude. The first step to losing weight permanently is to change your current lifestyle and not to only change it for a short period of time. To change it for good. This is the biggest battle we will face. Once you concur that, the weight will follow. I have been a victim of the get the weight off quickly and go back to your normal life and thinking it will stay off. It does not work. We need to exercise, make good eating decisions to stay lean. You will reach your goal!

Have YOU Noticed the Little Things ?!?

First off, I apologize. Everyone has such nice short and sweet journal entries but I just can't seem to keep mine short. I HAVE to write all my feelings and changes that are happening. I don't want to forget where I came from. I want to remember the little things. I want to remember the hard times as well as the good times. I want to remember so that others can be helped and know they are not alone. I want to remember so that when I go through something hard again I want to look back and remember "if I got through THAT, I can get through ANYTHING." "There is an end in site" for what ever challenge I will go through. I have skimmed on my journaling so that I could make them short and quick reads for other but I must focus on what I need! So i do apologize to everyone.

With that said.... I am SO EXCITED!!!
There are sooo many little things (No pun intended... last name being Little) that I have noticed changing with my body. I usually keep track of them but haven't for a while so I thought I would share them.
*My hands are smaller! Most the time now when my husband holds my hand he comments, "WOW Your hands are so much smaller." Woohoo!!
*I like typing because out of the corner of my eye, I can now see the bones working in the top of my left hand. So amazing. Our bodies are so amazing, how they work.
*I am constantly sliding on and off my wedding rings because I LOVE the way they just slide off. 1yr ago I had to tear my skin to get even one of the two rings off for an mri. Now they are almost sliding off.
*The muscles in my calves are showing more definition. i can now see the not so little now creases that the muscles make. Another amazing body function.
*I like flexing my legs and feeling the hard muscles. I even get overly excited when I feel an new muscle emerging and have to show my kids and husband. haha
*(ok this will sound really bad but...) I actually like getting undressed to get in the shower. Because I get to see ALL the changes I have made to my body and the new ones coming forth.
*Last week I looked in the mirror and it looked like my waist was getting bigger? WHat really? But the measurements were smaller last month. Why? I realized because my hips and everything else is getting smaller!!!! So excited.
*Today I looked in the mirror and noticed that I have those vertical creases that are the start of ABS!!!!! Really? I have abs??? I have NEVER had ABS
*I love that my trainer is telling me that I HAVE to buy new workout clothes because the old one's are WAY too big.
*I LOVE that my friend's daughter talks at school with my daughter about how amazed she is at how much I have lost. When I bought new workout clothes, she told Em she didn't realize how much I had lost until then. Gotta love clothes that fit....The other day she was getting out of the car and tripped and almost ran into me. Here's her quick comeback, "I just wanted to get an up close look at your skinniness." LOL I LOVE that girl.
*I love the little compliments I get from everyone: through text msg, emails and in person. From good friends and even their husbands! "hey there skinny mini" K.B & J.D. "Look at your waist" R.R "I didn't want to shout it across the room but you look AMAZING" S.H.
*I love the simple comments when I feel like I haven't progressed much but then someone who has been gone for 3 months comes back and the first thing she says is how much i have changed and how good I look. R.H.
*My old shoes fit better.
*My shirts I bought for a trip a couple months ago are getting too big.
*The skin on my arms are tightening.
*That I can and sometimes HAVE to dry my clothes in the dryer to shrink them!
The list could go on.

We are always looking for these MAJOR changes when we need to look and enjoy ALL the minor changes that make up the major changes!!!

WHAT LITTLE CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED?

Enjoy the LITTLE things & revel in them!!!! Never Give UP
  • By mikecalhoun on June 12, 2011 8:05am

love the journal, and it is the little things that keep us going, and it will be the little things that we will see day in and day out forever!!
  • By Christina B. on May 24, 2011 8:24pm

Awesome, Rachel!!!!! the little things are the best!!!!!
  • By Karen Van Dehy on May 24, 2011 6:42pm

I don't have to unbutton my shorts to take them on and off. and my work pants too - I am constantly pulling them back on. need to find some painter pants that fit!
and I like showing off my arm muscles.
  • By Erin Keith on May 24, 2011 5:11pm

Yes, I have been noticing them, too! Sometimes I just sit here and things come to my mind that get me all emotional. I'm such a crier! LOL
I'm so happy for you!!!! Keep up the wonderful work and GO SHOPPING FOR SMALLER CLOTHES!!!!
    Hugs, Clarity & Strength...Erin

I get crazy on my journals too, just trying to get my feelings out, even tho sometimes I do offend people with my negative thoughts, but it's not good to keep them in, or so I thought. I have had a few compliments too and it feels so good. Gives you that extra lift to keep going.
  • By JR Rodrigues on May 24, 2011 3:32pm

    Awesome !....Good for you Rachel,,,,:)
  • By Ben D on May 24, 2011 3:15pm

Write all you want - especially when you write like that.

I too now actually like the mirror, and sometime catch myself on my way past, saying something like "Dude, your abs rock!!!". And I've had to buy new clothes (especially shorts) as well. Never thought it was all that much fun, but I'm sure enjoying it now.

Keep up the good work - and the great posts
  • By thall24 on May 24, 2011 3:07pm

Fantastic post. I think it's all about the little things. Those little things add up and make big things. I can tell you that little things like needing a new belt is huge!!!!!!! Or, not having to use the extender anymore when going to chiropractor and using the back stretcher machine (haven't needed extender for several months now). It keeps me going as it keeps you going as well. Keep up the "little" things :)

LOVE IT! I'm right with you! LOVE my LITTLE changes! You look fabulous! :)

SUPPORT Time! :o)

I am struggling today with being munchy/hungry (I think I might have a bit of what my husband has... But I'M NOT GOING TO GET IT :oD)
Anyway, my thoughts?.... I need to read some posts from my MM family and get pumped up & motivated again!!!! WOOHOO!!!

I am so excited that we have almost made it ALL the way... to the next challenge.... the rest of our healthy, happy, motivated, supported life!!!
Chris Rohde posted about if we could continue for the next 12months if we win.... HECK YEAH! Wether we win or not we ALL will continue right?!! We all deserve the support from each other!!! I believe THAT is the ONLY way we will all WIN in the end!!

WHO'S WITH ME?!?!?! :oD

  • By Ben D on May 24, 2011 9:07am

As silly as it might sound, try cucumbers. Kenny at MM kept pushing them on me, and they work. Crunchy, a little sweet and almost 0 calories.
  • By Katie Van Winkle on May 22, 2011 9:04pm

    :)
I liked that post he did a lot. It's such a life changing thing. Keep it up! Make good decisions everyday. Tonight I was at my son's friend's birthday party and there was only cake and ice cream. I was SOO hungry but I kept telling myself. What good is that food going to do for my body? Nothing. Why am I wanting to eat it? Because it looks good. Do I want to waste the whole day and all the hard cardio I put in? No. And I came home and ate an apple and almond butter. :) Good luck.
  • By Katie Sutherlin on May 23, 2011 5:44am

Good for you Katie. This Katie had a really awful food weekend but I do like what you asked yourself to make that choice, I need to focus more and not let the moment get me. Congrats on your decision.

Yes, protein will help curb your hunger and drinking a large glass of water. What about trying a protein shake? That ALWAYS works for me!

Thoie that are not there shall bemoan their fate. We happy few, we band of brothers!
  • By PolarBear on May 22, 2011 4:57pm

When I get the munchies I try to eat protein of some type, (recently its been turkey jerkey), I've heard there is a chemical in protein that helps with being hungry. At least that's what works well for me.
  • By Timothy Wilson on May 22, 2011 4:25pm

Exactly Rachel. We all keep each other motivated then we all are WINNERS. We are doing something that a lot of people want to do but don't have the determination or discipline to do. So keep pushing hard. You either go Hard or go home is what I tell myself....
